The Newcastle Songwriter’s Workshop is a monthly event that provides an opportunity for composers and songwriters of all ages, styles and abilities to connect, share their music and explore different ways of making it. Each session will be regularly facilitated by genre-hopping composer, songwriter, choir leader and multi-instrumentalist Christopher Sutherland (Abhaya Sky, Hidden Strings, Petrichor, The Spooky Men’s Chorale), and will feature guest workshops from other composers and educators from time to time.
Held over 2 hours with a tea break at intermission, the sessions will begin with a short lecture and group discussion on one particular aspect of composition. The possibilities are endless, but subjects could include mindset and mental health, lyric writing, creating a lead sheet, polyrhythms, exploring instrumental extended techniques, modes, seventh chords, writing backing vocals, arranging for an instrument or kind of ensemble, writing a round, basic home recording, etc. Once we have explored and discussed the topic we will break out individually or in groups and find a way to apply that on an instrument, computer or notepad. Pianos and a couple of guitars will be available at the hall, but composers are encouraged to bring an instrument they are comfortable with. We will then come back together and share what we have learned if we feel up to it.
There will be time for sharing works in process or completed songs, during which composers may ask for constructive feedback. There will also be time for questions and open discussions, and finally a chance to reflect and set an intention for the coming month.
All participants will receive a booklet created for the workshop that provides a framework and some help in getting started writing original music in any style.
Cost: $30 per session payable by cash or bank transfer.
Time and date: 7-9pm every second Wednesday of each month beginning on the Wed 13th of March.
Location: Scots Kirk Hall, 21 Murray St Hamilton NSW.
